An American TV newsreader has been forced to take out a restraining order against her co-host after receiving threatening e-mails.

Amy DuPont, 30, would receive harassing emails on her computer while presenting the morning news show in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The emails from a mysterious 'Mario' complained about her repeatedly talking about her maternity leave and also criticised her presenting skills on TV show Daybreak.

Police were able to trace the emails to her co-host, weatherman Zach Brown, 27.

Brown admitted his flat-mate had sent the emails with his knowledge after he became jealous of the attention the glamorous news anchor was receiving.

He has since been fired from the TV station. A court hearing ordered him to stay away from his former co-host for five years.

The bizarre harassment case came to light after mother of one DuPont complained to her bosses that she had received 21 harassing emails since 2007.

Some of the emails mentioned that her co-host Brown was a better presenter.

The author signed the emails with the name Mario.

After police were called to investigate earlier this year they found the computer's IP address was registered to her co-host Brown.

He admitted the emails had been sent from his computer but said his room-mate  Jonathan Edwards was responsible.

Brown said Edwards thought DuPont had been 'mean' to him.

He told a court this week that he knew his roommate was sending the e-mails and asked him to stop, but it never occurred to him that it was harassment.

Brown said he took the emails 'with a grain of salt'.

DuPont told the court she confided in Brown about the e-mails and how upsetting she found them.

La Crosse County Family Court Commissioner Gloria Doyle described the case as disturbing and ordered Brown to not have any contact with DuPont, to stay 100ft away from her home and to stay away from her child.

WXOW-TV News Director Sean Dwyer confirmed that Brown no longer worked at the station.
