A Florida man said he had been thinking about murdering a homeless for two weeks before finally killing him with a butcher knife and waiting for him to die before calling police.

John Stabile, 23, called Broward Sheriff’s deputies Saturday to report he had just killed a homeless man in Deerfield Beach, Florida, just north of ritzy Miami Beach.

Deputies didn't take long to find Stabile - he was waiting at the scene of the crime with the suspected weapon tucked in his waistband, anxious to tell authorities just how he did it, according to reports.

Admitted killing: John Stabile, 23, was charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Broward County Main Jail on Saturday

'I'm in shock,' Stabile's uncle, Angelo Saccente, told the Sun-Sentinel. 'He's not a bad kid. There's another side to the story of why Johnny did what he did.'

Shortly after 7am on Saturday, deputies were sent to the North Ocean Drive after Stabile called to say he had killed a homeless man.

When they arrived, he was sitting on the curb with the suspected murder weapon.

Saccente said his nephew was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2009, shortly after his mother committed suicide, according to the report.

Stabile has been in and out of mental hospitals ever since, his uncle said.

'He imagines people are coming after him,' Saccente said. 'It's a shame what he did. He just needs his medicine. We feel so bad — for the victim.'

A employee at a nearby motel told the newspaper that Deerfield Beach is usually a sleepy, quiet little town.

'This is like a little Mayberry," he said. 'It's very safe here. You don't even see fights down here.'
