Lupita Nyong'o Oscars 2014 Dress: Blue Prada With Plunging Neckline

Publish date: 2024-06-19

Lupita Nyong'o nailed it! After knocking 'em out of the park on one red carpet after the next throughout her very first awards season, the 12 Years a Slave star did not disappoint for the biggest night of them all.

For her Academy Awards red carpet debut, the first-time Oscar nominee, 31 looked ethereal in a light blue silk Prada gown with crystal-embellished pleats and a deep v-neck plus platform sandals and clutch, also by Prada. Nyong'o added height to her short-cropped 'do and added dazzle with Fred Leighton jewels, including a gold and diamond headband.

She spoke to E!'s Ryan Seacrest about her Oscar night gown: "This was made for me," she said. "It's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi, so I wanted to have a little bit of home," the Kenyan actress said. One funny revelation? "I didn't grow up watching Oscars! It something I came to understand when I was in college," she admitted.

The Kenyan actress secured her spot as a style superstar when she wore a vibrant red Ralph Lauren dress with an attached cape to the Golden Globes. She's since worn a rainbow-array of colors with interesting necklines but little embellishments (See: Green Dior at the BAFTAs, custom blue Gucci at the SAGs).

Nyong'o has also played with different hairstyles throughout the 2014 awards show season like the faux widow's peak at the Critics' Choice Awards. "It's nice to work with someone who's more daring and who wants to take a few risks," her hairstylist Ted Gibson, who created the look, told Us Weekly. "It's always a collaboration, but she has to have final approval because I want her to feel like a million bucks."
