Today's 'Wordle' #919 Hints and Answer for Monday, December 25 Game
Merry Christmas, Wordle players. Newsweek is here to help you solve today's brainteaser if it's taking too much time away from your festive celebrations.
The English-language puzzle game was created by New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle and it quickly became a viral hit after it was made public in 2021.
Wordle's sudden rise in popularity led The New York Times to step in and purchase the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in January 2022. It remains free to play via the publication's website.
Part of Wordle's success can be attributed to its simple gameplay loop, where players try to solve a five-letter word in six attempts or fewer.
When a letter is in the correct place it turns the tile green, if it is the correct letter, but in the wrong place, it will turn yellow. The tile turns gray if the letter is not in the word at all.
Joel C. Wallenberg, a senior lecturer in language at the University of York in the U.K., previously told Newsweek the popularity of Wordle reflects ongoing interest in the English language.
"Language always seems to be fascinating to people. This is perhaps because producing and understanding language is a fantastically complex process, and we are only aware of the tiniest bit of that process while it's going on; most of what we do when we speak, we do unconsciously," he said.
"But it may be that people have an inkling that they're doing something very involved and impressive when they speak, even if they don't know the details or why it should be that way.
"Language games poke at how conscious (or unconscious) we are of our own linguistic processes, and maybe give us a little more insight into them than we had before. That might be one reason why humans, maybe universally, have always invented and enjoyed language games."
